Affectionately known as ‘the Bees’, Beeston Hockey Club compete in the premier division of hockey and are one of the leading clubs in England. More than 60 current pupils at Trent represent the club, from the U12 side to the first team and senior set up, playing alongside various alumni and members of staff. Mr Wood, Hockey Coach and Head of Year 11 at Trent, also coaches the Beeston Men’s 1st XI. These connections are testament to our whole school commitment to hockey and the talent that is nurtured on our hockey pitches.
Head of Trent College Mr Penty said, “With Trent College’s reputation for sporting excellence and our school’s long-standing relationship with Beeston Hockey Club, I am delighted to continue our support with kit sponsorship this season.”
Our Sports Philosophy
The sports programme at Trent is a thriving, living and breathing organisation where experienced staff provide the best possible coaching and opportunities for pupils. Our ‘3 Ps’ sporting philosophy – Participation, Progression and Performance – ensures that every pupil receives tailored support according to their abilities. For more able players, the highest levels of support are delivered through our ‘Performance’ programmes.
Building links and partnerships with organisations is essential for providing pupils with access to a high level of performance and a variety of pathways. By sharing resources, coaches and facilities, we develop both our pupils and our staff.
“Our sports department works closely with key organisations to ensure pupils have the very best opportunities to maximise their potential in any sport and our relationship with Beeston Hockey Club is a prime example of this,” Mr Mahony, Director of Sport, explained.
“We have numerous players in the junior set up and the men and women’s senior teams. Ruby (Year 12) is a key player in our 1st XI and the Beeston Ladies’ 1st XI, while former pupil OT Sam Apoola scored four goals for the Bees in the HA cup final, coached by our very own Mr Wood. The squad also included two other OTs and current PE teacher Mr Gleeson.”
Sporting Success
This month has been a historic one for Beeston Hockey Club, who successfully earned their first ever cup double when both the men and ladies’ first teams became national champions in their respective competitions.
Last year Trent College also made history when they became U18 Girls’ National Indoor Hockey Champions for the first time (pictured below) and this year the school received national recognition in School Sport Magazine when they were listed 11th on their ‘Top 100 Independent Sports Schools’.
Iain Randall, Trent Head of Hockey and former National League player for Beeston HC, said, “Having close links with Beeston allows our players extra game time and continued stretch to their development. The relationship is key to our player development programme, which is designed to maximise each player’s future potential. It’s a great club with a great set up and we’re delighted to be a partner with them.”
Chairman of Beeston Hockey Club David Griffiths said, “Our relationship with Trent College is both longstanding and special. I’m in absolutely no doubt that our Men’s and Ladies’ premier division teams will wear the Trent College emblem on the front of our shirt with absolute pride, and I look forward to strengthening our partnership for years to come.” Pictured above in the new kit are players who are also members of the Trent community past and present.
